OUR HISTORY

The Myanmar Center for Investigative Journalism (MCIJ) is an independent, nonprofit media agency specializing in investigative reporting. It was established in 2020 by a group of experienced journalists who recognized the necessity for newspapers and broadcast agencies to go beyond day-to-day reporting.

Myanmar’s press faces budgetary constraints and negative effects due to the sudden shift to digital media, drastic changes in the media landscape, intense competition, political pressure, and safety concerns. These challenges make it difficult for many journalists to delve into the root causes of issues and hinder their ability to conduct in-depth explorations behind the scenes.

The MCIJ firmly believes that building a successful democratic country requires independent media, particularly investigative journalism, to play a pivotal role in securing and strengthening democratic institutions, defending and asserting press freedom, and ensuring access to information. We are dedicated to the pursuit of truth and firmly believe that exposing corruption and wrongdoings is vital for the well-being of society.

Our mission at MCIJ is to promote investigative reporting in Myanmar society and cover matters of significant public interest. Rather than competing with individual newspapers or radio and television stations, we aim to encourage the development of investigative journalism and foster a culture that embraces it within Myanmar’s press.

To achieve our goals, the MCIJ funds investigative projects for journalists and contributes stories to independent media outlets. We produce compelling video documentaries and conduct seminar workshops on investigative journalism and public policy issues. Additionally, we maintain an institutional blog, www.mcijmyanmar.org, to share valuable insights.

Through our reports, we have shed light on corruption, public accountability, and environmental protection, making a meaningful contribution to our society.
